Have you got a sore lower back? Tight hamstrings? A – not to put too fine a point on it – flat bottom? The culprit may be lurking right behind you...your glutes! The gluteal muscles are the ones that most of us sit on all day, and they don't like it. The good news is that all most of us need to do is wake them up, and not by doing 1000 squats at the gym either! Just clench them whenever you stand up from a chair, and consciously engage them when walking up stairs or steep hills. (If you're really keen, add more hills/stairs to your usual walk.)
Don't forget to stretch afterwards though!
If you find that you can't actually clench them, or – here's a little test for you – that you can't clench them individually, then it's worth mentioning to your osteopath at your next visit. We'll do some specific exercises with you that'll have them working in no time. Until then, happy walking!
